What is a Clinical Research Study?

Clinical research is a branch of medical science that determines the safety and effectiveness of medications, devices, diagnostic products, and treatment regimens intended for human use. These may be used for prevention, treatment, diagnosis or for relief of symptoms in a disease.

What to Expect

There are many phases within clinical research Study.

Pre clinical phase

Toggle Expand/Collapse

This is a stage where research is conducting using animals to find out if a drug, procedure, or treatment is expected to be useful. This stage of drug development takes place before any testing on humans.

Researchers test an experimental drug or treatment in a small group of people for the first time. The researchers evaluate the treatment’s safety, determine a safe dosage range, and identify side effects.

Phase II trials

Toggle Expand/Collapse

The experimental drug or treatment is given to a larger group of people with a medical condition for the intended indication for use to see if it is effective and to further evaluate its safety.

Phase III trials

Toggle Expand/Collapse

The experimental study drug or treatment is given to large groups of people with a medical condition for the intended indication for use. Researchers confirm its effectiveness, monitor side effects, compare it to commonly used treatments, and collect information that will allow the experimental drug or treatment to be used safely.

Phase IV trials

Toggle Expand/Collapse

Post-marketing studies, which are conducted after a treatment is approved for use by the FDA, provide additional information about long-term safety and effectiveness of the treatment, as well as identify any adverse effects not observed in the earlier studies. including the drug’s treatment or risks, benefits, and best use.
